I'm hoping to go to the US next year, I'd love to see somewhere in South America too.

At least you're not picky about places in South America...

    AND, Miss Smartypants...

In addition to the mainland, Scotland includes over 790 islands including the Northern Isles and the Hebrides.

Edinburgh, the country's capital and second largest city, is one of Europe's largest financial centres. Edinburgh was the hub of the Scottish Enlightenment of the 18th century, which transformed Scotland into one of the commercial, intellectual and industrial powerhouses of Europe. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, was once one of the world's leading industrial cities and now lies at the centre of the Greater Glasgow conurbation. Scottish waters consist of a large sector of the North Atlantic and the North Sea, containing the largest oil reserves in the European Union. This has given Aberdeen, the third largest city in Scotland, the title of Europe's oil capital.

The Kingdom of Scotland was an independent sovereign state before 1 May 1707 when it entered into a political union with the Kingdom of England to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain.

All of your citations are talking about its political status, and I have already conceded that in the area of independence and governance, it isn't what is defined as a country.

But I didn't say it was an independent country. I said it was a country, and it is. No other definition fits it perfectly either, as the last of your citations shows. It is "somewhat" this and "somewhat" that, etcetera etcetera etcetera.

And you shouldn't doubt everything that's in Wikipedia. Many of the articles are written by academics who are experts in their fields.

Be that as it may, in plain, everyday terms, as understood in normal conversation by normal people, it's a country.
