    MSN Help

For whatever reason, my computer refuses to install newer versions of MSN / Windows Live Messenger, so I have been using an older version for a while. Well, now it's forcing me to install a new version in order to use the program. However, I cannot install it. So, I am not sure what to do now. Are there any good messengers that I can use as a substitute?

Have you googled the problem? You can usually find a solution!

Unfortunately, I haven't had much luck with that. This has been a problem for a while. I was able to use an old version of MSN, but it's now trying to force me to update in order to login. I have tried installing various old versions, but nothing works. I used to get just pop-ups every now and then, saying that a new version was available and gave me the option to update. Now I can't log into MSN at all without installing a new version that I cannot install.

What do you mean you can't install? Talk me through what happens.

I'm forced to install a new version of MSN. I can install old versions, but they won't let me login. It says I that have to install a new one. When I try to install a new one, the progress bar and percentage don't change at all as if the installation was working.

    http://download.live.com/messenger

    Download.

Restart computer. Close all applications which might be running. Install. Leave it for a good few minutes.

You XP or Vista? If that doesn't work, perhaps your Installshield needs upgrading or something. Also, are you using Messenger+?

I have a similar problem with Hotmail. The old version doesn't work anymore, and Hotmail keeps forcing me to try and install a new version, but when I think it's fully installed and ready to go, I click on it but it doesn't run. I've tried loads of times but it never works so now I've had to give up on Hotmail.

Currently nothing, trying to use the regular messenger.

Whenever I try to install MSN, I get stuck at this.
Nothing changes and the percentage doesn't go up.

So basically you never get past the step 'Registering with Microsoft Update'? :/
