Ex-'American Idol' finalist Vonzell Solomon detained for luggage gun

    By Christopher Rocchio, 06/12/2008

Next time Vonzell Solomon wants to fly the friendly skies, she'll presumably double check the contents of her luggage.

The American Idol fourth-season third-place finisher was detained Tuesday at Southwest Florida International Airport after security personnel found a gun in her luggage, Lee Port Authority spokeswoman Barbara-Ann Urrutia told Southwest Florida's The News-Press in a Wednesday report.

The 24-year-old Fort Myers, FL resident reportedly forgot the gun was in her luggage until it was discovered as she was making her way through the TSA checkpoint on a U.S. Airways flight shortly after 12PM, The News-Press reported.

While Solomon has a concealed weapons permit, carrying the firearm into an airport is a violation of that permit, so the gun was confiscated and she was issued a notice to appear in court on a misdemeanor charge of carrying a weapon into an airport, according to The News-Press.

"She was given a notice to appear, which is typically what happens when there is someone who has done something like this," Urrutia told The News-Press. "When it's obvious that it's a mistake and there is a permit, we really try to work with people."

It is unclear whether the gun will be returned to Solomon upon the case's completion, Urrutia told The News-Press. The date of the court appearance was not immediately available.

Similar to thousands of hopefuls before him, Nigel Lythgoe's American Idol journey has reportedly come to an end.

Lythgoe has decided against executive producing Idol's upcoming eighth season, TMZ.com reported Monday.

While a replacement has yet to be named, TMZ.com reported Lythgoe thinks it is time for someone else to serve as Idol executive producer along with Ken Warwick and Cecile Frot-Coutaz.

He has also privately stated he is "not passionate about it anymore" as a reason for leaving the program, sources told TMZ.com.

Lythgoe began working for Idol creator Simon Fuller's 19 Entertainment production company in 2001 and is currently the president of 19 Television.

In addition to executive producing Idol -- which he has done since the Fox mega-hit premiered in June 2002 -- Lythgoe also co-created Fox's So You Think You Can Dance with Fuller.

Now that Idol is apparently out of the picture the 59-year-old plans to focus more of his time and attention on So You Think You Can Dance, for which he serves as executive producer and lead judge.

Lythgoe is also working on another "joint venture" with Fuller, TMZ.com reported.

I think he royally fucked up last year when he pulled that shit with Michael Johns.

Ryan: Last year on Idol Gives Back no one went home. Michael, you are going home tonight.

I kinda hate Nigel for that now. So C YA.

Haha and I read only 300 people came to the Puerto Rico Idol tryouts. I wonder if they'll even bother airing them on TV.

YESSSSSSS I totally heard about the Puerto Rico auditions LMFAO.

And that's too bad about Nigel... besides Simon Fuller he was pretty much the only "behind the scenes" Idol name I knew. Hopefully the show still goes smoothly without him!

They just HAD TO have auditions for the new season next week. Ugh, I remember auditioning for the Archuleta
season in September. Guess I'll have to wait for next year since next week's auditions are so inconvenient. lol
